Framing and Reframing: NEW LIM Radio

What if changing your life doesn’t always begin with changing your circumstances?

Sometimes it begins with changing the frame.

On this episode of Like It Matters Radio, Mr. Black explores a simple but powerful idea: we don’t just react to what happens in life. We react to the meaning we assign to what happens.

That meaning becomes our frame.

Frames influence what we notice, what we expect, how we feel, and what possibilities we can even see. Two people can experience the same circumstances and walk away with completely different realities because they’re looking through different frames.

So what happens when we learn to change them?

Mr. Black explores the work of Edward de Bono, including lateral thinking and the Six Thinking Hats, to show how changing the way we approach a problem can reveal possibilities we couldn’t see before. He also examines the creative process associated with Walt Disney: separating the Dreamer, Realist, and Critic so imagination isn’t killed by criticism before an idea has the chance to develop.

Because sometimes the problem isn’t that there’s no solution. We’re just attempting to solve it from inside the same frame.

But reframing goes far beyond creativity and problem-solving. It can change the way we understand our past. It can change the language we use about our present. And it can change what we believe is possible in our future.

Reframing doesn’t mean pretending painful things weren’t painful, excusing what was wrong, or denying reality. It means refusing to let an experience have the final word over your identity.

You may not be able to change what happened. But you can change what you allow it to mean about who you are and who you’re becoming.

Mr. Black challenges listeners to become more aware of the mental frames running quietly in the background and to practice something most of us rarely stop long enough to do:

Think about your thinking. Because when you change the frame, you can change the meaning. Change the meaning, and you can change your response. Change your response, and you may begin changing your life.

Inspiration. Education. Application.

When you live your life like it matters… it does.
