See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. The Word for today is, PARAENESIS. Merriam Webster defines it as “an exhortatory composition: advice, counsel.” Wiktionary adds: “Advice or exhortation, particularly of a moral or religious nature.” A simple way to understand paraenesis is: “Do this because it is right.” It is not abstract theology. It is applied wisdom, moral coaching, ethical exhortation. Paraenesis is identity-based exhortation, calling people up, not calling people out. It is the Warrior’s challenge, the Leader’s guidance, and the Conduit’s encouragement. There are other examples of this in scripture. Romans 12:1; Present your bodies as a living sacrifice…. Romans 12:9; Let love be genuine…. Galatians 5:16; Walk in the Spirit….1 Peter 2:1; Rid yourselves of all malice…. These are exhortations (a strong, urgent encouragement; a call to action, a push toward doing what is right, wise, or necessary), not doctrinal explanations.
Leader, the repeated plural verbs matter. Verbs are action words! We are called to DO THINGS. Just like LOVE Is a verb and not a noun, so too is FAITH! Paul is speaking not only to pastors or elders, but to the whole congregation. The church is meant to be a mutually responsible, spiritually discerning body. This is a list of actions to take- things to do. Admonish the idle/disorderly; Paul does not say, “Treat everyone exactly the same.” The disruptive or undisciplined need admonition: truth that warns, corrects, and calls a person back into responsible order. Encourage the fainthearted; When dealing with the “small-souled”- discouraged, timid, anxious, or easily disheartened people. They do not need a rebuke, they need comfort, reassurance, presence, and hope. Paul’s wisdom is that the same harsh approach cannot be used as with the undisciplined and the discouraged. One person needs a warning; another needs courage. No EQUITY here but UNDERSTANDING and PEOPLE KNOWLEDGE. On your own, go through this list of ACTIONS PAUL is calling true followers of Christ to VERB. Then look up each of these 14 words and look deeper, what does this action; LOOK like, SOUND like, and FEEL like. If you stop at vs. 20, you get 11 verbs. If you go through vs. 22, which is where the thought completes, you get to 14 things TO DO. The writers could have called this section of scripture; “How to Be the Church: Paul’s Fourteen Practices for a Healthy, Holy, Spirit-Led Community.” The title captures the purpose of the passage: it is a practical, relational, Spirit-sensitive blueprint for people who want to live faithfully together until Christ returns.
Conduit, Paul’s final commands in 1 Thessalonians are not disconnected commands; they are the blueprint for a mature church. It is a checklist: Correct those who are out of order. Encourage those who are discouraged. Hold tightly to those who are weak. Be patient with everyone. Refuse retaliation. Chase what is good. Keep rejoicing, praying, and giving thanks. Do not shut down the Spirit, but do not surrender discernment. Test what is said, cling to what is good, and reject every form of evil. Then trust the God of peace to do what only he can do: sanctify his people completely. Paul is not giving random spiritual bumper stickers. He is shaping a community that can live faithfully while waiting for the return of Christ. The broader chapter concerns the “day of the Lord”, which requires; sober watchfulness, mutual encouragement, leadership, peace, and holy living. The closing commands show what readiness looks like in ordinary church life: not speculation, but patient care, moral faithfulness, continual worship, and wise discernment. Soon it will be illegal, or much more costly, to be a Christian! When that time comes will there be enough evidence to convict you? People get ready, there is a train a comin’! Maranatha!
