Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! Oh, fear the LORD, you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack! The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing. – Psalm 34:8-10 ESV
Warrior;
David was running from Saul, and Saul had vowed to kill him because of jealousy. David ran to Gath. He was in such bad NEED of deliverance He sought refuge in the city of GOLIATH! However, some of the king’s servants knew David and began to sing the song, “Saul hath slain his thousands, but David has slain his tens of thousands.” David realized that he was recognized. Because of fear he feigned madness. He drooled and acted like a CRAZY man. He told them that he had come to join the army, but he purposely failed the test. He marked on the gate and roamed and staggered as a mad man would. Upon this deliverance, he wrote the 34th Psalm.
Leader, the book of Psalms is a collection of prayers, poems, and hymns that focus on the worshiper’s thoughts about God in praise and adoration. There are 150 psalms; David wrote 73 of the psalms- other psalmists include Moses, Solomon, Asaph, and Sons of Korah, 50 are anonymous. This Psalm was used to sing and read when alone among enemies. When one was captured in battle, he would lean heavily upon the 34th Psalm. A summary of this would be found in v6-7: “This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear Him, and delivereth them.”
Conduit, many people don’t understand the difference between the Psalms and Proverbs. The Psalms are vertical to God; The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. (Ps 23:1) The Proverbs are horizontal about people: Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth. (Prov 10:4) The Psalms are divine counsel whereas the Proverbs are practical counsel. The Psalms include God’s commands, while the Proverbs include human opinions. While the Psalms are prayers, the Proverbs are merely wise sayings. If you want to know God, feel God’s presence and have a better relationship with God, read the Psalms. If you want to know yourself and have a better relationship with others, read the Proverbs. Whatever you WANT, seek GOD and WISDOM through the daily DIGESTION of SCRIPTURE: Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! Amen!
