According to the commentary by Matthew Henry this is a Psalm of David where He changed his behavior before Abimelech. Its teaching is general, both by way of thanksgiving to God and instruction to us. 1- He praises God for the experience which he and others had had of his goodness (v. 1-6). 2- He encourages all good people to trust in God and to seek to him (v. 7-10). 3- He gives good counsel to us all, as unto children, to take heed of sin, and to make conscience of our duty both to God and man (v. 11-14). 4- To enforce this good counsel he shows God’s favor to the righteous and his displeasure against the wicked, in which he sets before us good and evil, the blessing and the curse (v. 15-22). So that, in singing this psalm, we are both to give glory to God and to teach and admonish ourselves and one another.
Leader, 2 key points in this section of the Psalm; “Boast in the Lord and Magnify the LORD”. This is why, this is a GENERAL teaching, this should be said about the Bible in its entirety. Our Pride, our Joy, our ‘claim to fame’ should be God and what He has done and is doing in our lives! Our focus should be on the LORD and we should DIMINISH our problems, our concerns, our FEARS. He must increase, but I must decrease.” (John 3:30) In times of trauma and drama we should magnify the LORD and Keep our FOCUS on HIM! When David slayed the Giant from Gath, His focus was on David’s, BIG GOD, not on his BIG FOE! See 1 Samuel 17. If you want to change your behavior, keep your focus on the LORD!
Conduit, to be successful in this WALK WITH GOD- we need to FOCUS! The TIME IS NOW: get our EYES off of ourselves and off of our enemies and get it ON TO OUR GOD! For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9) And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. (Matthew 10:28) May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; may those who love Your salvation ever say, “Let God be magnified!” (Psalm 70:4) When God is magnified, our FOES and FEARS are diminished- then we can CHANGE WHO we are and WHAT WE DO: Inside-out!
