Be careful not to forget the LORD your God by failing to keep His commandments and ordinances and statutes, which I am giving you this day. Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses in which to dwell, and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all that you have is multiplied, then your heart will become proud, and you will forget the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. – Deuteronomy 8: 11-14 BSB
An effective CHILD OF GOD remembers the RIGHT THINGS. We have a tendency to have short term memory on the good stuff in our lives, yet we have no problem remembering the ‘not so good stuff’. This is not by accident, this is a strategy, a WILE of the Devil and it is also part of the make up of this creature we call HUMAN. If we could think about the commandments of God as an instructional tool in Abba Father God, developing and growing His children into the Children of God he intended them to be. Not only is God our CREATOR, but He is also our Savior who walked a ‘mile in our moccasins’, so He also knows the limitations of being human and has the empathy of walking this journey in this flesh for 33 years. It is written: For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:15-16) Not only does our God know our frame, Psalm 103:14, so He knows our tendencies and our quirks. He is also omniscient; Perfect knowledge- our God is a know-it-all. Hear the Word of the Lord; Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose’. (Isaiah 46:9-10)
Leader, the book of Deuteronomy is called the 2nd law. It is the fifth book of the Torah, where it is called Devarim, “the words of Moses”, and the fifth book of the Christian Old Testament, where it is also known as the Fifth Book of Moses. The book offers a restatement of the Law for a new generation, rather than a mere copy of what had gone before. Deuteronomy records this “second law”—namely Moses’s series of sermons in which he restated God’s commands originally given to the Israelites some forty years earlier in Exodus and Leviticus. The entire book is about REMEMBERING what God has done, and has promised and the HOPE, the GOOD NEWS that comes from FOLLOWING AFTER HIM. God commands us to Remember more times than any other command. God knows we are easily distracted. We are distracted by the WORLD, by our FLESH, by our technology, our smart phones and TV’s…our hurts, our pains, our needs, our wants, our jobs and even our ministries. God wants us to be different, He wants us to focus on HIM and our FATHERS business. So God constantly asks us to Remember! In the Jewish sense REMEMBERING is not sitting and thinking about the past. The Hebrew, the Biblical sense of REMEMBER, is more than the opposite of forgetting. In Genesis 8, it is written that God remembered Noah. This is the first time the Bible records God, REMEMBERING. “But God remembered Noah and all the animals and livestock that were with him in the ark. And God sent a wind over the earth, and the waters began to subside. The springs of the deep and the floodgates of the heavens were closed, and the rain from the sky was restrained.” (Genesis 8:1-2) In Genesis 30:2, God remembers Rachel and opens up her womb. In Exodus 2:24, God hears the groaning of the Israelites in Egypt, and He REMEMBERS His covenant with Abraham bringing about their redemption. God is showing us TO REMEMBER is to ACT AS IF! God’s intent; REMEMBER means ACTING upon that REMINDER! Remembering is to be closely associated with Doing. Jesus Himself at the LAST SUPPER commanded the same; And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” (Luke 22:19) From a Hebraic perspective, you Remember by Doing.
Conduit, not only are we easily distracted by the flesh, the world and the building of our own kingdoms on this planet, we are also dealing with a wily foe who is the accuser of the brethren. And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. Then the angel showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, with Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. (Revelation 12:10, Zechariah 3:1) We are called to REMEMBER the RIGHT THINGS. The things that God has done, the things that God has promised and what God says about who we are when we are in fellowship with the ALMIGHTY. We must have discernment and we must REMEMBER: Who we are in Christ, what we are called to do, why we are here and WHOSE WE ARE. We need to forget our PAST FAILURES and remember our FUTURE HOPE! Two friends were walking through the desert. At some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other in the face. The one who got slapped, was hurt, said nothing, and wrote in the sand: “Today my best friend slapped me in the face.” They kept on walking until they found an oasis and decided to take a bath. The one who got slapped in the face got into trouble and almost drowned, but his friend saved him. After he recovered, he took a chisel and with it carved in the stone: “Today my best friend saved my life”. The friend who had first slapped him and then saved his life, asked: “When I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now you write on stone. Why?” The other friend replied: “When someone hurts us, we should write about it in the sand so that winds of forgiveness can blow it away. But when someone does something good for us, we should engrave it into stone so that no wind can erase it. I pray that today we may all REMEMBER how good our GOD is and that HE IS RETURNING SOON! Look up and remember…the RIGHT THINGS! It is written: But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation. (1 Peter 2:9,10-11)
