And again Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son, and sent his servants[a] to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come. Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.’ And those servants went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. So the wedding hall was filled with guests. – Matthew 22:1-3,8-10 ESV
This is a great Parable and it basically lays out the entire gospel. From the Jews rejecting Christ, to the time of the Gentiles, to the fact that we can only be clothed by the RIGHTEOUSNESS of CHRIST, no other way can we get into the Kingdom- and per the story, STAY IN THE KINGDOM, properly clothed. We cannot be clothed in our GOOD WORKS, because our best attire in the “Good Works” category, would get us THROWN OUT, if we were able to get in, in the first place- which we will NOT BE ABLE TO DO! This parable is also similar, most likely the same story but told from a different person’s perspective, in Luke 14. One thing to really notice is the WHOSOEVER. Notice that there were people who were originally invited, THE JEWS, but they were too wrapped up into RELIGION to see the MESSIAH. They were CLOTHED in SELF RIGHTEOUSNESS and in the fact that they thought they were special, but the only thing that made them special was that GOD CHOSE THEM.
Leader, Deuteronomy 7 is the original version of what became this parable. “For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the LORD set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but it is because the LORD loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers, that the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations, and repays to their face those who hate him, by destroying them. He will not be slack with one who hates him. He will repay him to his face. You shall therefore be careful to do the commandment and the statutes and the rules that I command you today. (Deuteronomy 7:6-11) This parable mirrors what God said early on to the Israelites through Moses. ‘They have made Me jealous with what is not God; They have provoked Me to anger with their idols. So I will make them jealous with those who are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation. (Deuteronomy 32:21) Paul reiterates this important reminder in his letter to the Romans 10:19 and then slams home the fact in Romans 11:11; I say then, they did not stumble so as to fall, did they? May it never be! But by their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, to make them jealous.
Conduit, God is not done with the Jews, He just moved them aside to focus on the Gentiles, but once the Number of the Gentiles is completed, He will then focus His attention back on the Jews to bring them back into the fold, this will be the time of Jacob’s Trouble- The Great Tribulation. God loves us because of who HE IS, not because of who WE ARE. We are saved from Hell and rewarded with eternity with God based on what HE DID, not on what we do! And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life”. (John 3:14-16) Did you pick up the, WHOSOEVER in v14? WHOSOEVER is mentioned over 180 times in the BIBLE! God is NOT a respecter of persons, or RELIGIONS! This is about how GOOD GOD IS, not how good we are. THIS IS ABOUT WHAT JESUS did, not about what you and I do! Righteousness means our STANDING BEFORE GOD- it is not about our behavior! The Lord is not slow to fulfill His promises as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. (2 Peter 3:9) The word REPENTANCEmeans to change your mind, to turn to- do something different. Confession of sins is also commanded, and that word means; to agree with God. JESUS PAID IT ALL, all we have to do is CONFESS our sins, REPENT of our sins and accept the PAID IN FULL price of Jesus on the cross. When we do those three things, then God welcomes us to His wedding banquet as the BRIDE OF CHRIST, His church! I don’t know about you, but I am hungry for some manna! Come Lord Jesus, Maranatha!
