Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac. He himself carried the fire and the sacrificial knife, and the two of them walked on together. Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” “Here I am, my son,” he replied. “The fire and the wood are here,” said Isaac, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham answered, “God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two walked on together. When they arrived at the place God had designated, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood. He bound his son Isaac and placed him on the altar, atop the wood. Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. – Genesis 22:6-10 BSB
Here is the first image of the Messiah we get. It is interesting to consider the whole Abraham and Isaac connection. We can see in Abraham the Father of our Faith, an example for us, and we can also see the same in Isaac. We can also see our Savior in Abraham, and if we have eyes to see- also in Isaac, Even as Abraham “believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”. Abraham serves as an example for us, and a blessing for us. He believed God, and that faith was regarded by God to be his approval of Abraham, and His Spiritual offspring. And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness. (Genesis 15:5-6) And that same day, God made a covenant with Abraham, but it was made with Himself. God made the covenant concerning Abraham, Israel, the Promised land being given to Abraham and his descendants…. that was all done the same day! When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites.” (Genesis 15:17-21) To whom does the land of Palestine, or the PHILISTINES, belong to? It is clear here, that the only country formed by God in the Bible is the land of Israel!
Leader, But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (Hebrews 11:6) Abraham was an example of our Faith and the workings of God with Abraham are representative of our workings with God. As a matter of fact, we are told by Paul many times that the “interactions” with Abraham are available to all who call on the name of Jesus. To give a human example, brothers: even with a man-made covenant, no one annuls it or adds to it once it has been ratified. Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your offspring,” who is Christ. This is what I mean: the law, which came 430 years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to make the promise void. For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by promise; but God gave it to Abraham by a promise. (Galatians 3:15-18) There is another dimension to this interaction between Isaac, Abraham and God. Not only does Abraham’s interactions flow to us, but Isaac also has something to offer to us as an example of Christ and our interactions with God. Isaac trusted His Father. Isaac was a willing participant; he carried the wood for the sacrificial fire, He allowed Himself to be bound and to be laid on the altar of Sacrifice and when wondered where the sacrifice would come from, Abraham introduced us to JEHOVAH JIREH, the GOD WHO PROVIDES!
Conduit, God provides ALL THAT WE NEED. It is said that God never calls us to do something that He does not, ALSO equip us to do. God knew exactly what was going on, He just needed willing participants. GOD HAS THIS, and He provides all that is needed. We see this same thing happen some 400 years later, as promised by JEHOVAH JIREH. Tell all the congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month every man shall take a lamb according to their fathers’ houses, a lamb for a household. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male a year old. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats, “Then they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. (Exodus 12:3,5,7) But the blood on your doorposts will serve as a sign, marking the houses where you are staying. When I see the blood, I will pass over you. This plague of death will not touch you when I strike the land of Egypt. (Exodus 12:13) This event was told to Abraham over 400 years earlier when we were already dealing with Grace, yet God told Abraham the Law was coming and there would need to be a PROPITIATION made for the shortcomings of mankind. As we can see here, the CHRISTMAS STORY is all throughout the Bible, even in the beginning. And the second thing that is clear is that GOD HAS THIS! The Bible is also replete with examples of how God has provided the way, the means, the sacrifice, and the outcome that we need and should desire- we just need to TRUST IN THE LORD and ACT AS IF! When we ACT AS IF God is in control and He has provided all that is needed, we can truly WALK BY FAITH, not by sight! For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (Jeremiah 29:11, Hebrews 12:2, Ephesians 2:10) No matter what the NEW YEAR brings, know that GOD KNOWS and HAS PREPARED you for it! Have Faith and ACT AS IF- God is in control and He is Omniscient, Omnipotent and Omnipresent!
