Therefore, he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 1 John 2:1-2 tells us, My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. The Greek word for atonement is ‘hiloskomai’, meaning to propitiate. Christ is “the propitiation,” because HE SATISFIED our need. HE became our substitute, CHRIST assumed our debt, our obligations- He expiated (paid for, redressed, redeemed, offset our guilt), covered it-by the vicarious(substitute) punishment which He endured so we won’t have to.
Leader, Norman Geisler writes, “One of the most important expressions of salvation is the word atonement, translated from the Hebrew ‘kaphar’. Literally, kaphar means; “to cover”, but it also carries a broader meaning of “expiation, condoning, wiping away, placating, or canceling. The Authorized Version translates kaphar as: To appease, to dis-annul, to forgive, to be merciful, to pacify, to pardon, to purge to put off, and to reconcile. The key thoughts are TO COVER OVER in God’s eyes, and\or “To Wipe Away”.” That is what the blood of Jesus has done to anyone who accepts His price- paid in full! He wipes it away, He forgets, He send is to a place that doesn’t exist- as far as the east is from the west. (Psalm 103:12) Through Him you believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him; and so your faith and hope are in God. (1 Peter 1:21)
Conduit, God knows our need- He knows our Frame! (Psalm 103:14), The Bible tells us, God knew us before we were born! See (Jeremiah 1:5, Psalm 71:6, Is 44:24, 49:15). Since God is also immutable, He cannot change, He is omniscient- He is all knowing. In other words, God knows your stuff, HE always knew your stuff, and He knows the stuff, you have yet to know- and He died for it all, so YOU CAN LIVE ETERNALLY WITH HIM! No one is righteous–not even one, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. HUMANITY is in need of atonement-MERCY! Jesus is the Fathers solution to the sin and separation problem. As a father shows compassion to his children, so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him. (Psalm 103:13) Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned. (Romans 5:12) It has been written that “Mercy”, in many forms, is in the Bible over 340 times. Clearly, this is a KEY PURPOSE for the incarnate LIFE of JESUS, the CHRIST. Will you accept HIS gift of MERCY and tell others of its availability? You will- ONLY IF, you know YOU NEED IT and UNDERSTAND; it is required for entrance into heaven and it is ONLY AVAILABLE through the acceptance of JESUS!
