And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. And he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.” And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to answer him. And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.” Mark 14:32-42 ESV
This interaction in the Garden of Gethsemane is one of the most tortuous experiences, outside of the crucifixion, as we walk with our Jesus as He waled incarnate. Jesus, GOD HIMSELF, came down from His Heavenly throne to occupy the vessel, known as a human body, lowered Himself from the King of the Universe to a tent that was lower than the angels and subject to the Sin of the world, He actually became SIN- the thing that He despises the most. “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God’. (2 Corinthians 5:21) As we consider the magnitude of that spiritual, physical, and emotional ‘demotion’, look at how we were so preoccupied with the things of this world that we missed HIM, HIS MESSAGE and HIS MEANING! We are created in a way that we work at the unconscious level. It is said that we only use 3-5% of our brain consciously. A Majority of our life we are unconsciously going through the motions- basically sleepwalking through life and then one day, it was predetermined, God will call us home and then we will be judged for what we did on this planet. It is written: It is appointed for man to die one time and then be judged. “But God said to him, ‘You foolish one, tonight your soul is required of you. The things which you have prepared—whose will they be?’. See parable on ‘The Rich Fool”; Luke 12:16-21.
Leader, Casting Crowns wrote a great song years ago, called, ‘While you were sleeping’, it hits on this very subject. It is a story about how Bethlehem and America missed the Messiah, while we were sleeping. Here are some of the lyrics: “Oh Bethlehem, what you have missed while you were sleeping? For God became a man, And stepped into your world today. Oh Bethlehem, you will go down in history, As a city with no room for its King, While you were sleeping. While you were sleeping”. The final stanza brings it home to America: United States of America, Looks like another silent night. As we’re sung to sleep by philosophies, That save the trees and kill the children, And while we’re lying in the dark, There’s a shout heard ‘cross the eastern sky, For the Bridegroom has returned And has carried His bride away in the night. America, what will we miss while we are sleeping? Will Jesus come again, And leave us slumbering where we lay? America, will we go down in history, As a nation with no room for its King? Will we be sleeping, Will we be sleeping? The same story can be found in all three Synoptic Gospels, Matthew 26 and here in Luke 22: At last he stood up again and returned to the disciples, only to find them asleep, exhausted from grief. “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation.” But even as Jesus said this, a crowd approached, led by Judas, one of the twelve disciples. Judas walked over to Jesus to greet him with a kiss. But Jesus said, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” (Luke 22:45-48) If we are NOT AWAKE we will miss the wiles of the devil, we will miss the opportunities God has prepared in advance for us to walk through, we miss the special moments where we get to be JESUS to someone else! How many angels have you missed, how many times did you miss being an ANGEL to someone in need- while you were SLEEPWALKING through this fleshly existence?
Conduit, in the study of NLP, we are shown that there are 4 Levels of learning: Unconscious incompetence, Conscious Incompetence, Conscious Competence and Unconscious Competence. When we add this to the understanding that we only use 3-5% of our brain consciously, we realize we MISS MUCH IN LIFE, as we SLEEPWALK through the trials and travails, the Peaks, and the Valleys of Life. Out of all we miss in life, nothing will have broader and more lasting impact than the missed opportunities to BE WITH CHRIST, to BE LIKE CHRIST, and to BE CHRIST to another. Read the Parable of the 10 Virgins, and see how 5 of the virgins were sleeping when the Bridegroom arrived, and they were locked out of THE WEDDING CEREMONY! Instead of being PREPARED, they were SLEEPING! See Matthew 25:1-13. Before the parable of the 10 virgins God, through Matthew tells us: Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. (Matthew 24:44) “Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning, and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them. If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants! But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house to be broken into. You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” (Luke 12:35-40) We must BE ON ALERT. IT IS TIME TO WAKE UP! The Time of the Gentiles is coming to a close, and we need to be AWARE and AWAKE to what TIME it is on the PROPHETIC Calendar, thus AWARE of what is required of us. This is why we must be in THE WORD, not the WORLD, in Prayer and IN the world, but NOT OF THE WORLD! Do this daily and be sober-minded because NO ONE WILL KNOW THE HOUR OF HIS RETURN- but it is soon, and you don’t want to miss it, WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING!
