“Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”- Psalm 91:14-16 ESV
Psalm 91 is a beautiful Psalm- it is a Psalm of protection, covering and power for those who TREAD WITH THE LORD. We are NOT sure who wrote it, although some believe it is one of 2 psalms that Moses wrote; Psalm number 90 is absolutely known as being written by Moses- some speculate that Moses also penned 91, but it is not known for sure. However, we do know that the person who wrote the Psalm was aware of the great covering of our LORD for those who choose to WALK WITH HIM! This sounds like it could be written by a MAN who knew God intimately after walking a long rode that required dependence on God. I can see why some would consider Moses as the author and since he wrote the preceding Psalm 90, it does make sense. Is your walk with God such that you could be mistaken as the writer of this Psalm? Do you know what it is like to be delivered from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence?
Leader, Biblestudytools.com says this about the Psalm: “Psalm 91 tells of a Man, who is able to tread the lion and adder under His feet. — Undoubtedly the Tempter was right in referring this Psalm to “the Son of God” (Matthew 4:6). The imagery of the Psalm seems to be in part drawn from that Passover Night, when the Destroying Angel passed through Egypt, while the faithful and obedient Israelites were sheltered by God…. In the whole collection there is not a more cheering Psalm, its tone is elevated and sustained throughout, faith is at its best, and speaks nobly. A German physician was wont to speak of it as the best preservative in times of cholera, and in truth, it is a heavenly medicine against plague and pest. He who can live in its spirit will be fearless, even if once again London should become a lazar-house, and the grave be gorged with carcasses.” Is your walk with God such that you know; You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday?
Conduit, no matter who actually penned the Psalm it is the HOLY SPIRIT who inspired it and who ultimately transcribed these words. Psalm 91 is about confidence in the Lord, when we walk with HIM in HIS SHADOW. The larger a person or object, the bigger the shadow they cast. When we treat God as our Guide, as our WALKING PARTNER, we are covered by HIS SHADOW and by HIS MIGHT. When we walk with God, He guides us and protects us- A defense for the needy in his distress, A refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat; “He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge” (Psalm 91:4) Jesus even spoke this idiom when He was incarnate; “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! (Matthew 23:37) ARE YOU WILLING to let God be ABBA DADDY and guide and protect you? Today, read Psalm 91 and REST in the knowledge of HIS PRESENCE and HIS PROTECTION and HIS ALMIGHTY WILL! Snuggle up with the LORD and TRUST in HIS POWER and HIS PEACE!
