When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures. The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.” – Luke 4:16-19 NLT
Now there is a mission statement! Bring good news to the poor, release those who are captive, help the blind see, those oppressed are freed and declare the HOPE of GOD’s favor. This verse was taken from the Old Testament writings of Isaiah; The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn. (Isaiah 61:1-2)
Leader, this was our LORDS MISSION STATEMENT. We need to know why HE WAS HERE, why He became incarnate and dwelt among us. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. (John 1:1-4a, 14a) Jesus came to give us an EXAMPLE, to WALK IN OUR SHOES, so that the WORD became REAL and touched us! Jesus told us HE is our example, we are to FOLLOW HIM, to do what HE DID: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life”, He is saying, “I AM YOUR EXAMPLE, do what I DO”. “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. (John 14:12)
Conduit, Jesus knows that a picture is worth 1000 words. He showed us with HIS ACTIONS, and HE tells us with HIS WORD, and all we have to do is BE LIKE JESUS! What is your mission, what should you be doing daily? First and foremost, Follow Jesus’ lead, and know the poor: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3). We must be humble in our spirits. In other words, when we come to God, we must realize our own sin and our spiritual emptiness and poverty- apart from HIM. We must not be self-satisfied or proud in our hearts, thinking we don’t really need God, or we are better than others. God will NOT bless that. The Bible says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6). We help people release from the self-captivity of our thoughts and patterns. We are to “bind” those broken hearts back together: wrap them up, bandage them; bind them back together. Psalm 147:3 says this is indeed what He does: “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” We are to speak life to others; One of the most powerful spiritual laws is: if something is going to happen, something must be spoken. We won’t have something just by saying something- but saying something is necessary to having something. We are to FREE the oppressed. Sin is an oppressor and we are to help people be FREE from the slavery of sin: “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Today, be LIKE JESUS and stay on HIS MISSION for your life- For the year of the LORDS FAVOR is coming soon and so is the DAY OF VENGENCE of our God. Remember, we are on a RESCUE mission. Time is short, LIKE JESUS, we must be about our FATHERS business, while it is still daylight. “We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work”. (John 9:4) Today, Bring some Good News!
