Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. – John 12:25-26
The word of God is living and active- it is a FIELD with buried treasure that, when we spend time digging in its soil, we are blessed with Gems of untold value! There is only one verse of teaching in all four Gospels. One could surmise, if there’s only one teaching of Jesus’ to be found in all four Gospels, then it must be of paramount importance. Jesus must have wanted to emphasis A KEY POINT by placing it in all four Gospels. This teaching is present in six places in the Gospels. Matthew records it twice, Mark once, Luke twice, and John once. When you study the context of these six mentions, you realize they are pointing to four distinct events.
Leader, there is no doubt- like all great teachers- Jesus would have repeated His primary teachings throughout His 3.5-year incarnate ministry. But in terms of the record we have in our hands, there is only one teaching of Jesus’ that we’re told He gave on four different occasions. This MUST be important, because It must have been His most common teaching. We don’t have a record of ALL He said and did as John said at the end of his epistle; Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. (John 21:25)
Conduit, for whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. (Mark 8:35) See also Matt 10:39, Matt 16:25, Luke 9:24, Luke 17:33. The words are recalled slightly different- but clearly the same teaching! Find your life, you’ll lose it; lose your life, you’ll find it. John’s wording: Love your life, you’ll lose; hate your life, you’ll keep it. Do you have ears to hear! Lose your life. Hate your life. This was the foremost and most-repeated word of our Master. You will see that the context in which Jesus delivered this teaching was different in each of the four events listed! Interesting, because it is a message that relates to ALL areas of life! If you are HIS, then you NO LONGER LIVE- all parts of your life belong to HIM! I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Gal 2:20) For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? To LIVE IS CHRIST, to DIE IS GAIN! Give it up for the ONE who gave His all!! Amen!
