Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?  Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye?  You hypocrite first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye. – Matthew 7:3-5 ESV

We are called to have discernment.  We need to know WHO is talking to us.  We all talk to ourselves, it is called thinking!  It is very difficult to listen to more than one person at a time.  It is hard to follow more than one person at a time- impossible if they are 2 opposing forces.  Even Jesus warned us of this lie: “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. (Matthew 6:24)

Leader, there is a difference between discernment and judging.  We are called to know RIGHT from WRONG.  We are called to BE LIGHT and stay away from the DARKNESS.  We are called to know when we are walking UPRIGHT, and when we are BACKSLIDDEN.  This is not judgment, it is discernment.  Discernment is the ability to decide between truth and error, right and wrong. Discernment is the process of making careful distinctions in our thinking about truth. The ability to think with discernment = the ability to think biblically. But test everything; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil. (1 Thes 5:21-22)

Conduit, in the book of 1 John, 4:1 we are told to have discernment; “Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world” According to the New Testament, discernment is not optional for the believer-it is required. However, Judging is to decide who is of God and who is not.  Judging is playing God and discerning the intent and quality of someone’s heart, and that is only for God to know and judge! Only God knows who His children are- that is way above our pay-grade!  God is telling us in this verse to worry about our own walk and quit playing God with others.  God is telling us; “if you are so keen on ‘calling out’ this sin in your brother or sisters’ life- why are you OK with it in your own?”  In 2 Timothy 4 we are reminded, it is Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead- not some mere creature.  Today, do your job, walk with CHRIST and discern darkness and light and be of the FATHER in this dark, evil world.  And while you are being the best follower you can- GIVE others PERMISSION to follow God in a world that hates HIM.  Be a good example for others to follow and create a culture around you that allows for others to BE all HE has created them to be in CHRIST JESUS. Amen!
