What the true proverb says has happened to them: “The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire.” – 2 Peter 2:22 ESV
You can tell a man’s religion in time of despair. When all else is stripped away from someone you know what they are made of. We are illogical creatures! Paul exhorted the Galatian church; I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— (Gal 1:6) We have muscle memory, we have psychological anchors and we have trauma and drama from our past- and many people are stuck in their past, as they profess to be moving to their future! It is our FLESH that makes us wallow in the mire.
Leader, during the EXODUS the Jewish people where being freed from slavery and bondage. The God of the universe freed them from captivity from the most powerful country on the earth. God had them leave that foreign land with spoils for their captors of jewelry, food and goods. God actively showed HIMSELF to these people and the first time the hit a WALL- the Red Sea, they want to return to their vomit: Is not this what we said to you in Egypt: ‘Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.” (Exodus 14:12) Do you often resemble these hard-hearted children?
Conduit, we are NEW CREATURES in Christ Jesus, the old has WASHED AWAY- don’t go back to it! Remember the Devil is the accuser of the brethren, he is constantly reminding you of your past, of your sin and your sin nature. When the devil, or your flesh remind you of your past, you just REMIND HIM OF HIS FUTURE! For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. (2 Timothy 1:7) Why does a DOG bark, because it’s a dog. Why does a cat meow, because it is a cat! Why do we sin, because we are sinners. So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. (Gal 5:16) But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. (Romans 13:14) And remember when God looks at us, He sees the RIGHTEOUSNESS of CHRIST! Even though we want to keep reminding ourselves of our past, and the devil wants to remind God of our past, God says your past doesn’t matter! What does God do with our past? As far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. (Psalm 103:12) In the mighty words of Hawk Nelson: “So go ahead and live like you’re loved. It’s ok to act like you’ve been set free. His love has made you more than enough, so go ahead and be who he made you to be.”!
