And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.) And he blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” And Abram gave him a tenth of everything. – Genesis 14:18-20 ESV
God has many names. The Bible is full of the NAMES OF GOD! We must go back to the Original Text of Hebrew or Aramaic, for the OLD TESTAMENT, or Greek with the NEW TESTAMENT. Here God is called, El Elyon–the Most High God. This name identifies God as the sovereign ruler of the universe. Let’s be honest, it feels as if our world is constantly in a state of chaos and confusion. Natural disasters like tsunamis, earthquakes and floods, the proliferation of nuclear weapons, poison gas and enemies within and without-, children killing parents and parents killing children, the rise of radical Islam, the disappearance of an America that used to Honor, Fear and walk with God- WE need to know-GOD, El Elyon, IS still IN CONTROL!
Leader, In Genesis 14 we find this name of God used four times in the story of Melchizedek. Lot, Abraham’s nephew, had been taken captive in the midst of a war between nine Canaanite kings. With nobody to turn to, Abram went out to rescue Lot and as he was returning home, he met Melchizedek who introduced himself as the king of Salem- the KING OF PEACE, and the ETERNAL- no beginning or end- priest of God Most High (El Elyon). Unlike Melchizedek, all the other kings and priests with whom Abram had come in contact were worshipers of the Canaanite gods. In that moment, Melchizedek reminded Abram that what had seemed like an impossibility—rescuing Lot from hundreds of military men—was accomplished because Abram had El Elyon on his side. If God be FOR US, who can be against us! (Romans 8:31)
Conduit, based on the Bible, the earliest specific name by which Abraham worshiped the true God was as the Most High God (´El `Elyon). This name for God is a pair of words, Hebrew ´el `elyôn: ´ēl, is the generic term for God. The Hebrew word `elyôn, means “most high,” (from the root `ālā, “go up, climb, ascend). It expresses, “the exaltedness and overwhelming majesty of God. `elyôn, as a divine name signifying the supremacy of the deity! Melchizedek (pre-incarnate Jesus) sees ´El `Elyon as being “Creator of heaven and earth” (14:19b) in the same way as Abraham does (14:22) — in other words, both Melchizedek and Abraham see ´El `Elyon as totally supreme over everything in earth and heaven, — TOTAL supremacy; Omniscient, Omnipresent and Omnipotent! “Let them know that thou alone, whose name is the LORD, art the Most High over all the earth.” (Psalm 83:18) This is OUR GOD! Trust in GOD- HE IS IN CONTROL- and lean not on your own understanding! If you know El Elyon, then you know that you are in the HANDS OF GOD- what can man, or life do to you outside of HIS WILL! Rest in HIS HANDS!
