Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. – Philippians 1:27-28 ESV
We are called to live a life WORTHY of the GOSPEL! We are to LIVE on this planet a LIFE that demonstrates the IMMENSE VALUE of the GOSPEL of CHRIST! What does this word WORTHY mean? In the original text, Greek, the word is AXIOS. It has the root meaning of balanced scales. We measure things by making sure something on one side, corresponds to something on the other side. We find out that this thing on one side has the value of this thing on the other side! The English word, the base word is WORTH- the value that something has, how much something costs, how important something is! We must remember our citizenship is in HEAVEN and ACT LIKE we are HIS ambassadors in chains- while IN the world- we are NOT OF the world, we ACT DIFFERENTLY!
Leader, Paul is telling us that we should walk/LIVE our lives in a way that DEMONSTRATES the INCREDIBLE COST, the extreme value of the GOSPEL in our lives! In the Philippian church there were some- like today’s church- who were NOT walking in a way worthy of our LORD and our SAVIOR Jesus! We might NOT be persecuted the way they were in Philippi, but we too are being tempted to COMPROMISE our beliefs, and our lifestyle and many in the process have fallen away from the TRUE GOSPEL! What value do you place on the GOSPEL of JESUS? What worth is your salvation? Is it worth being ostracized, ridiculed, called a bigot or close-minded? What are you willing to LET GO OF, to show the VALUE of what God did to save you; your rights, your ego, your own way?
Conduit, Jesus tells you and me what VALUE our SALVATION has: Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul? (Matthew 16:24-26) This is so important Matthew mentions it 2 times, see Matt 10:39, and each of the synoptic Gospels mention this statement from Jesus. (Mark 8:35, Luke 9:24). In other words: To gain the lower now is to lose the higher hereafter, and conversely, to lose the lower for the sake of Christ-is to gain the higher. Jesus was always making bad deals for HIMSELF, but GREAT DEALS FOR US! For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Cor 5:21) Jesus Christ is telling you, YOU ARE WORTH everything to HIM- including enduring the shame, the curse, the LONELINESS of hanging on a tree and being poured out for you and for me! Today, WALK IN A WAY WORTHY of the price that Jesus paid!
