But as one was felling a log, his axe head fell into the water, and he cried out, “Alas, my master! It was borrowed.”  Then the man of God said, “Where did it fall?” When he showed him the place, he cut off a stick and threw it in there and made the iron float.  And he said, “Take it up.” So he reached out his hand and took it.- 2 Kings 6:5-7 ESV

Warrior;

J Vernon McGee did a great sermon on this MIRACLE.  He made some interesting illuminations; this seems like such a small event, it doesn’t even seem to muster the worth of being written in scripture to the normal reader.  However, when we study the text this is a powerful lesson, and a great miracle! What a great message; The GOD OF THE UNIVERSE is interested and involved in the little details of our lives!

Leader, this passage also shows you the IMPACT that a committed leader can have on individuals.  Elisha taught at the School of the Prophets.  He was well liked, a great, personal character!  This was a seminary student- limited means.  There were no hardware stores, AND weapons-tools of any type were rare and of great value- (see 1 Sam 13:19-22).  He borrowed the axe head and would have been responsible to replace it- which would have been impossible- so punishment would ensue.  The young man was in a crisis and His teacher was walking with him, as his mentor and leader, someone who CARED about what HE cared about!

Conduit, this is a picture of us and our LORD- do you have eyes to see?  Man is like the axe head, God created man with, and for, a PURPOSE. God was DWELLING with ADAM and EVE in the Garden and gave him dominion over the world.  But man SINNED and FELL from intimacy with God and was sent out of the Garden and went down into the WATERS, lost to God in DEATH and defeat- lost his usefulness- until JESUS! With Jesus being the REAL and ELISHA being the shadow- JESUS returned us to our usefulness, our OWNER! God cut out a stick, cast it into the waters of death-the CROSS OF CHRIST.  We too can rise from the water like the FLOATING AXE HEAD. Christ came down into our MURKY WORLD to restore our USEFULNESS, just like ONESIMUS. In the book of Philemon v11, when Onesimus returned to Philemon with a letter from Paul he said: Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful to you and to me. Today, RISE out of the WATER and fulfill your usefulness to your FATHER through HIS SON, our SAVIOR, Jesus!
