Cush fathered Nimrod; he was the first on earth to be a mighty man. He was a mighty hunter before the LORD. Therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the LORD.” Gen 10:8-9 ESV
Warrior;
The only time we hear about NIMROD is here, in the Table of Nations. The Generations of Noah\Table of Nations is a genealogy of the sons of Noah and their dispersion into many lands after the Flood, focusing on the major known societies. It is a list of the patriarchal founders of seventy nations which descended from Noah through his three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed, saying, “Let us break their chains and throw off their shackles.” The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. (Psalm 2:1-4)
Leader, Nimrod’s name tells the whole story. It comes from the Hebrew verb marad, meaning “rebel.” Adding an “n” before the “m” it becomes an infinitive construct, “Nimrod.” Nimrod was rebellious against God, just like his antediluvian forebears, as well as, those who came after the flood- US! He was the first King of Babylon, he was a GIANT among men, and he was going to build a tower to God, to revenge God for the flood. He is the picture of using GODS gifts for HIS GLORY, and he is a picture of PRIDE- which comes before a FALL! For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has also rejected you. (1 Sam 15:23)
Conduit, Nimrod’s power and glory came to nothing, because God is stronger than even the mightiest of men, and He cannot be thwarted! Nimrod was a mighty hunter before the Lord, BUT humility before the Lord is the posture of the WISE. (Prov 3:34; 11:2; Ja 4:6; 1 Pet 5:5-6). Acts 17:25 tells us, God is not served by human hands. God is NOT impressed by our works, they are but FILTHY RAGS! God’s pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of the warrior. (Psalm 147:10) Construction of the Tower of Babel ended with a show of God’s power: the Lord confused the languages of the people, making it impossible for them to communicate effectively enough to finish the construction of the tower. So, Nimrod was proved wrong—all of man’s strength and ability, even the strength of the mightiest of men, is a gift from God that He can choose to revoke at any time. There should be NO CONFIDENCE in the FLESH. NO shared Glory, for it is God who is willing and working IN YOU- don’t be a NIMROD!
